Augustine profoundly influenced the way writers in the Middle Ages looked at the world around them, leading many to focus their intellectual efforts on finding a divine message in social and physical phenomena. With the rediscovery of Aristotle and his mode of analysis, there is a new-found optimism that "right understanding" of social and political processes might be achieved and then serve to define how it might be possible to "reform" society in one way or another.
